Quickshells
Origin
Whilst working at Wilmslow High School I met a young student called Russell, he was very keen and asked me to help him with a project. Russell runs several sites and an irc channel (#quickshells on irc.quakenet.org if your interested). He wished to build a server to run irc bouncers and robts from and after much pestering I agreed to help him.
The Kit
To run Quickshells webpages and irc bouncers and bots we needed a reliable but cheap server. I found a Sun Ultra 5 on ebay for a reasonable price.
There are several reasons I liked it,- Price
- Specification
- 360Mhz 64-bit Ultrasparc processor
- 512MB RAM
- Upgraded 30GB hard disk
- The chance to play with a 64 Bit risc computer
- The reliability of Suns
We decided to use www.poundhost.com as they would take any size server and offered a good deal on ip addresses.
IPTABLES Firewall
Coming When I have the time!
